IRCCS NEUROMED – Mediterranean Neurological Institute

The Istituto Neurologico Mediterraneo “Neuromed”, acknowledged by the Italian Ministry of Health as a Clinical Research Institute (IRCCS), is recognized as an highly specialized center in the fields of Neurosurgery, Neurology, Neurorehabilitation and in all applications relating to Neuroscience in which Neuroradiology and Vascular Surgery are performed. At the heart of Neuromed mission there is a strong integration of research, healthcare and training. Every day clinical departments offer therapies at the highest level, accompanied by an assistance always attentive to the needs of patients and families. From prevention to diagnosis, from treatment to rehabilitation, a path always aiming for excellence in healthcare. At the same time, Neuromed researchers offer their commitment and their passion to find innovative ways in the field of neurological   diseases. A world-class research, confirmed by constant and continuous scientific achievements. Finally, Neuromed Institute has an active role in teaching and training.

The Story
The Mediterranean Neurological Institute Neuromed was founded February 2, 1976 under the name of Sanatrix Clinic based in Venafro (Isernia). This name was changed in 1995, with the current one.
In 1983 the Institute got the first recognition as an Institute of Hospitalization and Care Scientific (I.R.C.C.S.), aimed at the study of neuroscience and treatment of the central and peripheral nervous system diseases.
Since 1994 is operating an agreement with the “Sapienza” University of Rome for the management of part of the clinical activities and the Institute’s research. 

 

In 2002 comes the Neuromed Foundation, a non-profit organization, whose purpose is the development and implementation of vocational training programs and health education and the implementation of support programs at the University and the dissemination of research results basic science and translational research in the field of neuroscience.
Recognition as I.R.C.C.S. was confirmed by the Inter-Ministerial Decree of July 16, 1991 at the new headquarters of Pozzilli (Isernia) and later by Decree of the Minister of Health of 15 February 2005.
From Neuromed it is born an innovative SME, the Pole of innovation Innomed. A start-up, created for the implementation of the homonym project aimed at the creation of industrial research and experimental development actions for the realization of a prototype of a wireless device can predict epileptic seizures. A project being implemented in collaboration with bioengineers, researchers international, renowned experts in epilepsy and ICT applied to biomedicine.

It has an agreement with the NATIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM (SSN)The Institute of Pozzilli has three internal pulsating hearts represented by as many specific areas, strategically interconnected: clinical, research and training. The Mediterranean Neurological Institute Neuromed houses a hospital center of excellence that conducts research, diagnosis and treatment in the field of neurological disorders, in neurosurgical oncology and related diseases, degenerative and rare chronic diseases of the nervous system. The research and assistance aims of the development of biomedical and biotechnological sciences, and is carried out in line with the objectives of regional and national health planning. The institute boasts ultra-specialized centers for the treatment of specific neurological disorders, diagnostic and surgical instruments extremely advanced and high quality as well as laboratories and cutting-edge technologies. The I.R.C.C.S. Neuromed is a health care institute can provide services with high added value by pursuing excellence in all activities: from assistance to the patient, to biomedical and health research, teaching and training, communication and science. A mission that draws its strength from precise values ​​due to quality, excellence and the humanization and respect for patients and their families.
The Neuromed Institute adopted, in 2006, the Regulation of organization and operation approved by the Board of Directors, which governs the organs and internal organization. The following are the main governance figures defined in the Regulation.

The document contains an internal Code of Ethics, a Disciplinary Code, the rules governing a special organ of control and specific procedures for implementing the “sensitive activities”.
